The Mad Race for the GTA
It is key knowledge that the ridings within the Greater Toronto Area play a crucial role in the federal election turnouts. Nearly half of the ridings located in Ontario are found in the boundaries of the GTA, making it a pivotal battlefield. Historically, the area has been generally dominated by the Liberals (notwithstanding the 2011 election), but in recent times, tables have begun to turn and the race has just gotten tighter.
Currently, according to a poll by The Forum Research Poll, the Conservative party is right up against the Liberals with 35% of the surveyed leaning towards the Tories and 36% planning to vote for the Liberals. This is a significant boost to the Conservative party compared to their performance within the GTA region in both the 2015 and 2019 elections. To make matters worse for the Liberals, their support has dropped nationwide by 5.9 percentage points, as the Conservatives have gained an extra 4.8 points.
In recent times, the race for the Greater Toronto Area has gotten as tight as ever. The Liberals and Conservatives are right up against each other, fighting for the pivotal vote-rich ridings. Tables are turning and it is likely that the parties will scramble to amass support in the coming days. The race for the GTA will definitely play a key role in determining the next government.
