OHSCA Statement on CUPE Strike

As 55,000 workers walk off of the job this Friday morning in order to strike, many students of elementary and secondary learning are being disrupted. We as high school students think it is extremely important that students stay in the classroom after two years of disrupted learning.

It is important that we have to start getting students back on track, and this strike is not helping, in fact any pauses to in-person normal learning does not help students, it rather ill prepares them for the future. The EQAO results best show that students need to be in the classroom more than ever, as there was a more than 20% drop in results for a grade 9 standardized mathematics test compared to pre-pandemic scores and the majority of grade 6 students failing a standardized mathematics test.

Furthermore, with many factors such as inflation and the rising cost of living, education workers need higher salaries and we as high school students need CUPE and the Provincial Government to come to a consensus as soon as possible to ensure our learning is not further disrupted and students can get back to the classroom as soon as possible.
